INTRODUCTION: DESPITE THE AGREEMENT OF EXPERTS, COACHES AND ATHLETES ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF SPORT PSYCHOLOGY CONSULTATION, REVIEW OF RESEARCHES ABOUT ATTITUDES OF THE ATHLETES TOWARD SPORT PSYCHOLOGY CONSULTATION SHOWS THAT THE DESIRE TO USE THESE SERVICES IS NOT EQUAL IN ALL ATHLETES. FACTORS INCLUDE AGE, GENDER, TYPE OF SPORT, CONSULTING EXPERIENCE, GEOGRAPHICAL AND CULTURAL DIFFERENCES EFFECT ON ATHLETES' ATTITUDES TOWARD SPORT PSYCHOLOGY SERVICES. HOWEVER, LITTLE RESEARCH WAS CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE HOW THESE DIFFERENT FACTORS INTERACT AND INFLUENCE ON THE EXPECTATIONS AND ATTITUDES OF ATHLETES. THIS STUDY WAS DESIGNED TO SURVEY PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES’ ATTITUDES TOWARD SPORT PSYCHOLOGY CONSULTATION AND SERVICES. THE AIMS OF STUDY WERE DETERMINING EFFECT OF FACTORS SUCH AS GENDER, AGE AND SPORT TYPE ON ATTITUDES OF LORESTANIAN PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES TOWARD SEEKING SPORT PSYCHOLOGY SERVICES.METHODOLOGY: THE PARTICIPANTS IN THIS STUDY WERE 120 PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES RANGING FROM 15 TO 35 YEARS OLD THAT HAD BEEN SELECTED THROUGH ACCIDENTAL SAMPLING. THE ATHLETES VOLUNTEERED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE STUDY AND INFORMED CONSENT RECEIVED BEFORE COMPLETING THE QUESTIONER. WE EMPLOYED THE SPORT PSYCHOLOGY ATTITUDES-REVISED (SPA-R) FORM (MARTIN ET AL, 2002). THE SPA-R COMPRISES 25 ITEMS AND CONSISTS OF FOUR SUBSCALES: (A) STIGMA TOLERANCE, (B) CONFIDENCE IN SPORT PSYCHOLOGY CONSULTING, (C) PERSONAL OPENNESS, AND (D) CULTURAL PREFERENCE. WE USED INDEPENDENT T TEST TO DETERMINE IF ANY SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES EXIST BETWEEN ATHLETES OR NOT. THE SIGNIFICANCE LEVEL FOR ALL ANALYSES WAS SET A PRIORI AT P<0/05.RESULTS: WE FOUND NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ATHLETES ATTITUDE TOWARD SPORT PSYCHOLOGY CONSULTATION BASED ON GENDER (MALE VERSUS FEMALE ATHLETES) AND SPORT TYPE (CONTACT SPORTS PLAYERS VERSUS NONCONTACT SPORTS PLAYERS), BUT RESULTS REVEALED SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ATHLETES WITH DIFFERENT AGE LEVEL (ADULT VERSUS YOUNG ATHLETES).DISCUSSION: OUR FINDINGS SHOWED ATHLETES ATTITUDES TOWARD SPORT PSYCHOLOGY CONSULTATION WERE RELATIVELY POSITIVE, BUT ONLY 25 PERCENT OF SUBJECTS HAD EXPERIENCE OF SPORT PSYCHOLOGY CONSULTATION. ACCORDING TO THE RESULTS, THE MOST IMPORTANT ITEM THAT MADE DIFFERENCE IN PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES’ ATTITUDES WAS AGE GROUP AND IT SHOULD BE NOTED BY SPORT PSYCHOLOGISTS AND OTHER RELATED SPECIALISTS TO PROMOTE THEIR SERVICES FOR ATHLETES.ALSO IT WAS FOUND THAT FACTORS SUCH AS LOW AWARENESS OF ATHLETES AND COACHES, FEW EXPERTS IN THE PSYCHOLOGY OF SPORTS IN THE COUNTRY, SEVERITY OF ACCESS TO SPORTS PSYCHOLOGISTS, THE COST OF THESE SERVICES FOR ATHLETES AND NEGATIVE ATTITUDES AMONG COACHES, EXISTED AS IMPORTANT PROBLEMS FOR ATHLETES TO USE BENEFITS OF SPORT PSYCHOLOGY SERVICES.
